Do You Know the Signs? Improving Dementia Diagnosis
At ImagingWest, we believe that everyone experiencing symptoms of memory loss or cognitive decline deserves timely, accurate answers. Yet far too many individuals go undiagnosed, delaying access to the care and resources that can make a profound difference in quality of life.
Why Early Diagnosis Matters
Receiving a dementia diagnosis early empowers patients and their families. It allows them to plan for the future, tap into emotional and practical support systems, and take steps to manage symptoms more effectively. Diagnosis can help reduce uncertainty and give patients a greater sense of control.
Studies show that nearly all individuals who are diagnosed with dementia recognize the benefits—only a small minority report no perceived value in knowing their condition. Yet, data from the UK and U.S. suggest that a substantial percentage of people with dementia remain undiagnosed.
One of the most common forms of dementia is vascular dementia, which may develop after a stroke or from conditions that affect blood flow to the brain. At ImagingWest, we’re committed to providing the advanced neuroimaging necessary to support clinicians in identifying conditions like these as early and accurately as possible.
What We’re Advocating For
While dementia awareness has grown, access to diagnostic tools and early evaluation must improve. Here's what needs to happen across health systems and communities:
Accessible Neuroimaging: Clinics must invest in imaging tools and training to improve the detection of various forms of dementia.
Clearer Diagnostic Pathways: Patients and primary care providers need better guidance on when and how to pursue cognitive screening and imaging.
Greater Equity in Access: Dementia diagnosis rates often vary significantly depending on location, access to specialists, and health system resources. We must bridge that gap.
The Value of Early Diagnosis
A formal diagnosis offers more than a label—it opens doors to essential support:
Time to Prepare: Individuals can make financial, legal, and personal decisions while they are still capable.
Access to Care: Patients can begin symptom management earlier through therapies, medications, and support groups.
Legal and Financial Protections: A diagnosis may qualify individuals for certain benefits or workplace accommodations.
Reduced Stigma: Understanding what’s happening—and why—can improve relationships, reduce fear, and increase compassion within families and communities.
The Role of PET/CT Imaging
At ImagingWest, we utilize advanced technologies to support dementia evaluations, including:
Through PET/CT imaging, we assess structural changes in the brain, as well as evaluate metabolic activity or amyloid plaques (where applicable).
We collaborate with neurologists and referring physicians to interpret results in a clinical context for the right diagnosis.
What treatments are available now?
Recent advancements in Alzheimer's treatment include the approval of Kisunla (donanemab) in, a monoclonal antibody targeting amyloid plaques to slow cognitive decline in early-stage patients.
Additionally, studies on GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide suggest potential in reducing dementia risk and slowing progression.
Get a diagnosis before it’s too late.
Our role as a diagnostic imaging center is to support this mission through fast, accurate, and compassionate care. By helping uncover the truth behind troubling symptoms, we give patients the clarity they need—and the dignity they deserve.
